Botox treatments help in smoothing out wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing the muscles and giving you a more youthful look. It can help slim your face and give you an eyebrow lift. It’s also a preventative measure to avoid having fine lines and crow’s feet.

If you decide on having the treatment, prepare accordingly by avoiding alcohol and blood-thinning medications a week before the treatment. It’s also important to know the things you should expect.

Dr Saami reviews some things you should know if you plan on having a Botox treatment:

●       Discomfort is minimal. Botox is a quick procedure and is virtually painless. The needles are so small that some people feel no pain. There can be minimal discomfort, but as long as it’s done by a practitioner who knows the right technique and where to inject, the procedure should have good results.

●       It is very effective at reducing the signs of aging. Botox can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, which will help restore a more youthful appearance.  Some studies show that Botox can even help ease depression, thus improving the patient’s mood and helping to make them feel younger and happier.

●       You might get some bruising or redness. You might notice red bumps immediately after your Botox treatment-- this resolves within an hour or two. Bruising is possible and should be minimal-- this will typically clear after a couple of days. You can reduce the risk of bruising by not taking ibuprofen or other over-the-counter medications a week before your treatment.

●       Your skin might not show improvements at first. The treatment takes time to act, so don’t panic if nothing seems to change after your first Botox injection. It’s totally normal, and it usually takes about 2 to 8 days to start seeing the results. You may see the full effects after a couple of weeks, but this may still vary among individuals.

●       Avoid touching or massaging your face. Do not rub or massage the areas that were injected with Botox for 24 hours. Resist touching it even if you have a headache as it can cause the proteins to spread into other areas of your face.

●       Avoid exercising for about 4 hours after the treatment. Strenuous activities might cause the Botox to shift out of the area the practitioner injected it into.

●       Remember that results will eventually improve. As mentioned above, it can take up to 2 weeks for Botox to take full effect. While waiting it out, you can look in the mirror and check how the Botox site looks like. You can smile, frown or crease your brow to see different changes for the next couple of weeks.

●       Avoid taking aspirin or fish oil. Don’t take these medications before your treatment or if you experience swelling or headaches after. These are blood thinners and can worsen any bruising you might have. You can also discuss changing the dosage of these medicines with your doctor before the procedure.

●       You’ll experience restricted muscle movement. Botox will relax your muscles to let you have a more youthful appearance.

●       It lasts about 3 to 4 months. After this period, you should get another treatment and stay consistently on schedule to maintain your youthful look.
